A VILLAGE group has come top of the class after being scrutinised by an education watchdog.

Jellybabies Nursery and Pre-School, based in Longbridge Methodist Church, in Bristol Road South, was inspected as part of the Ofsted scheme.

The main findings of the inspection were that staff at the pre-school gave a very warm welcome to parents and children and provided a stimulating learning environment where youngsters and adults were treated with respect and consideration.

The programme for personal and social development was very good and a strength of the group. Great care was also given by staff to build the children's confidence and self-esteem.

The children's behaviour was also said to be very good.

Language and literacy were also good as was maths, which was based on relevant practical experiences that led the children to a real understanding of a variety of mathematical ideas.

Physical education was also a definite strength of the group.

The report stated strong leadership from the supervisors ensured that good teamwork existed with staff sharing ideas and planning together.

It said there were no significant weaknesses, but staff should access training to develop their use of technology.

Jellybabies secretary Brian Kite said: "We are highly delighted with this report.

"One of this nature is remarkable, but once again it reflects the tremendous enthusiasm and ability of our leaders and the support of staff and parents."
