WORCESTERSHIRE would be interested in signing talented batsman Anurag Singh if he leaves rivals Warwickshire

The 24-year-old is known to be unhappy at Edgbaston where his contract is up at the end of the season.

The County's interest in Singh was confirmed today by New Road cricket committee chairman Martin Horton.

He said: "We would be interested, but we can't officially approach him at the moment.

"I know he's been unhappy at Warwickshire mainly because he can't keep a consistent place in the team.

"He's yet to be proven at first-class level, but someone said to me that he'll be as good a player as Vikram Solanki.

"That may be an exaggeration, but he's a good player if given the chance of a consistent place.

"If he came to us he would certainly be a regular first teamer.

"At this time of the year several players become available and we would look at anybody of a suitable standard who is looking to move."

Singh, who will be 25 on Saturday, has not played consistently for Warwickshire this season until recently.

He performed in last month's County Championship game against Worcestershire at New Road where, in the second innings, he hit an impressive 79 -- eclipsing his previous caeer-best score of 69 off the County attack at Edgbaston last season.

Singh captained Cambridge University and the British Universities and, at one stage, played in the same England Under-19 side as Solanki.

He cracked four first-class centuries for Cambridge University while his best one-day score is the 123 he notched for the British Universities in a Benson and Hedges Cup clash against Somerset at Taunton in 1996.

Meanwhile, Worcestershire are in negotiation with a couple of overseas players with a view to establishing their availability next season when Australian pace ace Glenn McGrath will be on the Ashes tour to England.

One of their targets has said he would be available while New Road officials are waiting to hear from the other player.

Worcestershire are starting to be linked with a number of players, including West Indian ace Courtney Walsh.

Horton, however, said there were no further developments on recent speculation about a link with the World record Test wicket-taker.
