SPA traders have hit back at claims they want more farmers' markets scheduled for the future.

The Droitwich Spa Advertiser reported last week that following talks with shopkeepers, Wych-avon District Council was working with market organisers Sketts to plan extra markets.

The authority claimed many High Street businesses reported an increase in trade when the market was in town.

However, Walter Newman, of Tenby House fruiters and florist, High Street, said a few markets are all right but he does not want them to become more regular.

"I sell fruit and vegetables and I don't want farmers coming in and taking away my trade.

"They are often dearer than High Street traders anyway, and they don't have to pay the rates we do," said Mr Newman.

Stuart Larnder, a director of the company which runs Droitwich Spa Market Hall, said: "We all want to see more people at this end of the town but farmers' markets can damage trade for our people.

A councillor on Droitwich Spa Town Council, Terry Spencer (Con, Droit.Central), of High Street shop Spatronics, said he had been involved in talks with other traders and the district council to discuss ways of making the Spa busier, especially at weekends.

"I think there has been a general feeling among traders that we have lost some impact this year because of the infrequency of markets," he said.

"Options discussed that could encourage more people to come into town have included more farmers' markets but also general markets, growers' markets and craft fairs."

Phil Merrick, of Wychavon District Council's economic development team, said: "The traders have to identify what is needed to enable their businesses to succeed.

"We are always happy to hear their views."
