DROITWICH Rugby Club claimed the notable scalp of Bedworth on Saturday with a 13-10 home victory.

Their visitors play a league above Droitwich and showed their quality in patches in a bruising but entertaining encounter.

Bedworth made the early running before Droitwich took the lead through a Simon Mountjoy penalty, followed by a well-worked Dave Halsall try.

Mountjoy added the conversion before Bedworth hit back soon afterwards with an unconverted try of their own.

In the second half both sides seemed to throw caution to the wind and opt for open out attack, although Droitwich were hampered by the loss, due to a head injury, of influential skipper Nick Godfrey.

Droitwich's defence held firm, as they extended their lead with another Mountjoy penalty. Wave after wave of Bedworth attack was repelled with Leon Hopkins, Matt Blackmore, the ever-versatile prop Greg Garfield and debutant Martin Smith particularly impressive in defence.

Bedworth eventually score their second try, although it was too late to affect the result.
