TROUBLED high street giant C&A has put a date on the closure of its Worcester outlet.

The CrownGate-based store will cease trading on Saturday, January 13, 2001, with the loss of 24 jobs.

Fashion chain New Look has already announced it will take up the prominent city centre site.

The household name made a shock announcement about ending its British operations in June, and staff have been helped in their efforts to find new jobs with training and support.

C&A's Worcester store has been open since 1992.

"The decision to close our stores and operations in the UK and Ireland has been a very difficult but necessary step," said Neil McCausland, managing director of C&A UK.

"However, the commitment and loyalty of the store staff has been amazing."

The European giant, which trades in 12 countries with a workforce of around 35,000, cited the changing face of the British High Street for its decision to throw in the towel.

Aggressive competition, a shrinking mid-market and a failure to match customers' needs were instrumental in the decision.
