IT'S TIME for blokes to put on their pinnies and get into the kitchen - men are being challenged to bake cakes for the Broadway Horticultural and Craft Show.

That's just one of the 83 contests to be judged at one of the best village shows in the Cotswolds.

Cups, trophies and cash are up for grabs at the prestigious event to be held on the village green, at 2pm, on September 9.

To add to the atmosphere Avonbank Brass Band will be playing a selection of tunes and charity stalls will be set out.

In the show's cookery section - category 74 - men are being given the chance to win £10 by baking a date and orange loaf using a WI recipe. Chairman of Broadway Gardening Club, Dave Roberts, whose committee organises the annual event said: "I hope we don't get people complaining we are not being politically correct - it's only a bit of fun with a sponsor putting up the prize money."

Superb tomatoes, onions, runner beans, shallots courgettes and many more vegetables will be lined up for inspection near the luscious fruit and fabulous flowers in the show's marquee.

There will also be plenty of opportunities for non-gardeners of all ages to show off their skills. Loads of fun categories are on offer for children, including making models, dinner table decorations, drawing their pets and submitting pictures of their holidays.

For the more ambitious there are categories for calligraphy, tapestry and crochet.

Mr Roberts said he wants this year's show to be better than ever. It has already become a great tourist attraction since the show moved from the Lifford Hall to the village green.

Last entries must be in by September 7. For full details and a schedule ring Mr Roberts on 01386 852774 or club secretary Eric Beadle on 01386 853141.
