UNPREDICTABLE weather and a lack of a carnival procession did nothing to dampen the Bank Holiday spirit in Bidford this week.

Organisers of the village Gala Day, which was held on the Big Meadow on Monday in place of the annual carnival, described it as a complete success.

Tony Bill, of the village's Christmas lights committee - which organised the gala, said: "It was brilliant, it was a cracking day and everybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves."

He said an estimated 2,000 people, many from as far away as Birmingham, flocked to the Big Meadow to watch and take part in the arena events and enjoy the funfair.

"There was lots to see and do and I don't think it lost anything by not having a carnival procession," said Mr Bill. "The arena events made up for it."

Toastmaster

Local toastmaster Reuben Lynch opened the event, which in addition to stalls boasted dancing displays and a steel band.

There were also various competitions including wellie-wanging, bonnie baby and glamorous granny contests, as well as it's a knockout games for all ages and a tug-o-war contest won by the Frog and Bulrush pub.

Mr Bill said the event looked likely to raise up to £2,000 for the village's Christmas lights, which are due to be switched on on November 26.
