A CONTROVERSIAL beauty spot in Droitwich Spa will become a shopping centre -- despite a ten-year battle to block development.

Primsland Estates Limited has won an appeal to build two shops including a convenience store off Primsland Way.

Plans were opposed by Droitwich Town Council, Wychavon District Council and residents who organised petitions.

Droitwich town mayor, Cllr Don Lawley (Con, Droit.Central) said: "This is bad news for shopkeepers -- it's yet another burden."

Cllr Lawley, also a district councillor, said: "People may use these out-of-town development instead of the High Street and shopping centre businesses."

Geoff Smith, owner of The Stores, in The Holloway, Droitwich, was amazed the appeal had been successful.

The 49-year-old, who organised a petition against plans, said: "I can't believe the Government can override community feeling.

"I'm sure any business the store has will be taken from other traders."

Shirley-based planning consultants CDS Develop-ment Services Ltd is in charge of the application.

Director Charles Robinson said: "When outline plans were refused by district councillors we appealed to the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and Regions who gave approval last Thursday.

"Construction work should begin later this year."

"I really do not think traders need worry," said Mr Robinson.

"Our research shows the majority of people on the estate shop out of town anyway because they drive to supermarkets or Worcester.

"The Government wants to reduce cars on the road and believes the store may encourage people to walk to shops."

He added: "The development will reduce maintenance burden falling on the town council and Droitwich taxpayers."
