DETECTIVES hunting a rapist who struck in a Worcester park were quizzing a man today in connection with the attack.

Police said a man "local" to Worcestershire had been arrested yesterday and was helping officers with their inquiries. They would not be drawn on whether he came from the city.

A major operation was launched after the 40-year-old victim was attacked as she walked through the children's play area in Gheluvelt Park, Barbourne, late on Sunday night.

As house-to-house inquiries have been carried out and dog-handlers combed the park for clues, police have described the attack as "horrific".

Det Sgt Andy Price, of Worcester CID, said investigations were still being carried out and information was continuing to come in from members of the public after media appeals.

He said the victim, who was walking home when she was attacked, was "obviously still traumatised" by her ordeal.

Det Insp Graham Smith, who is leading the 20-strong team, was pleased with the response to appeals but still wanted to hear from any witnesses.

He especially wanted to track down two women seen waiting at a bus stop in the Droitwich Road area.

They would have been waiting for a bus around 11pm.

"I'm particularly keen to hear from either of these women as I believe they may have information that will help in our inquiries," he said.

"If you may be one of those women, please contact me on 01905 723888."
