A MAJOR project to reduce the fear of crime for residents in Batchley has been stepped up with the launch of a safer home project.

The scheme forms part of the Salters Lane Action Project, which will see two flats transformed into a community base.

Work on the flats will be completed within three months following a £13,230 cash injection from Community Works.

The SLAP project has been set up jointly by Batchley Alliance, residents, Redditch police, Redditch Council and other agencies.

The safer home project will be run from the new building, offering every household in Salters Lane the chance to reach a minimum standard of security.

Youth and community safety officer Phil Bryers said: "The scheme will raise awareness of household safety issues.

"Advice and fitting of equipment, which includes a door chain, door viewer, smoke alarm and property marking kit will be free."

Volunteers will be trained by West Mercia Police and Worcester Fire Service to carry out home security and fire surveys on every property.

He added: "Since we started this project, people's fear of crime has gone down and the project has given them a sense of community and ownership.

He added: "It is all about improving the quality of life."

The community building will also offer drop-in style facilities for residents to meet agencies, such as the police.

Gardens in Salters Lane are now being revamped by Redditch Council's Environmental Task Force, which Mr Bryers said had also helped to create a safer feel.
