IT'S not often you find musicians straddling both sides of the business, but it has come naturally to Kidderminster soloist Sair.

The 18-year-old is currently polishing her songs in the run-up to her debut gig on Sunday, while juggling a full-time course in music industry management.

Inspired by legendary female artists Kate Bush, Sandy Dillon and Tori Amos, as well as Deep Purple and Kula Shaker, Sair admitted to a bout of stage nerves.

"I'm a bit nervous, but I had a practice gig at college last week which went well," said Sair, whose real name is Sarah Wharmby.

"When I originally started out I was hoping to be in a band but I decided to go solo because I don't really like people messing with my stuff.

"It'll be a great experience. I'm enjoying studying the music business, but I'm hoping to be the one being managed rather than the manager."

And with a repertoire of 20 songs, this could be more than just a dream.

With the help of Kidderminster College's own record label, Mighty Atom Smasher, Sair is hoping for a breakthrough later this year.

6 Sair plays the Boars Head tap house, Worcester Street, Kidderminster, at 8.30pm.
