SHOPPERS at Broomfields Farm Shop already known that it offers a very fine selection of foods.

Now, it's not just a matter of opinion because the shop has scored top marks in a national accreditation scheme from the National Farmers' Retail and Markets Association (FARMA).

It is one of only a handful of farm shops ever to do so.

Owners Fiona and Colin Broomfield say that they are delighted with the accolade.

"We have been open to the public since the 1960s. Over the past few years we have built up the shop business, selling our own fruit and other local produce primarily and to have recognition that we have achieved the highest standard is fantastic for all the team on the farm and in the shop," said Colin.

"It is a great reward for the hard work put in by everyone.'

The criteria for accreditation are based on quality, service and value for money, which, says FARMA, covers every aspect of the business from the customer's viewpoint.

During the inspection, Broomfields achieved the highest scores for the quality of its produce, its presentation, overall cleanliness and housekeeping. The storage areas behind the scenes scored as highly as those the customers see.

Staff, said the report, were knowledgeable, welcoming and courteous and the tea room was described as "delightful".

"Our reputation is built on freshness and the fact that we offer customers a better alternative to supermarket shopping," said Fiona Broomfield.

"We grow 16 varieties of apples and pears on the farm which are in season now. We invite anyone who wants to experience a real farm shop to visit us soon - you will find us on the A4133 on the river at School Plantation, Holt Health, near Worcester."
