IN reply to Miss J Stevenson (Letters, Friday, September 2), I would point out that money spent on building a library is not money wasted.

A library is a cultural necessity. It is a facility whereby those who wish to educate themselves, however young or however old, have an opportunity to do so.

Of course, it is always worth spending money on hospitals as this correspondent suggests. However, in these days when nearly everyone is equipped with TV and other modern items of equipment in the home, the city does not require another cinema. The football club is a private company and the general principle must be that private concerns should not be subsidised from taxation. However, the club does fulfil a need. Perhaps an exception could be made in its case and some limited assistance given.

Worcester.
