A MAN has died in what has become the second fatal road accident in Bewdley in a week.

Police appealed for information after two men were trapped in a Ford Transit van on the B4194 Bewdley to Stourport-on-Severn road, known locally as The Switchback, shortly after 7pm on Sunday.

Exactly a week before, 60-year-old Ludlow man Geoffrey Perks died at an incident on the A456 in the town when his BMW collided with two other cars.

In the latest crash, the passenger of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. He is yet to be formally identified.

The driver of the white van, a 29-year-old-man from Bewdley, was taken by ambulance to the Worcester Royal Hospital where his condition is described as stable.

PC Mark Rowley, from North Worcestershire's road policing unit, said: "We are trying to establish exactly what happened and are appealing to anyone who was along this stretch of road between 6.30pm and 7.05pm to give us a call if they have any information. We believe that a second vehicle was involved and witnesses we have already spoken to report seeing a red or maroon car travelling towards Stourport. We would urge the driver of this car to come forward.

"We would also like to hear from anyone who recalls seeing this or the white Transit van along the B4194 prior to the collision."

A small red car was found abandoned in the Vale Road car park in Stourport yesterday morning.

PC Rowley added: "This car is believed to have some damage to it and we are looking at the possibility that this was involved in the collision.

"We are appealing for the driver of this car to come forward and for anyone who saw it being left at the car park to get in touch.

"Even the smallest piece of information could make a real difference to our enquiries."

Anyone with information regarding the collision or the abandoned car is asked to contact police on 08457 444888.
