POLICE are hoping a dispersal order in the Costers Lane area of Winyates will prove as successful in warding off yobbish youths as others around the town.

The "Section 30" dispersal order, which started at 6pm on Friday, will run for six months.

Sergeant Neil Billingham said the police has applied for the in response to persistent anti-social behaviour by groups of rowdy youths near RZ Supermarket.

The new order covers land surrounding the RZ Supermarket and the underpass leading from the supermarket under Costers Lane together with adjoining land.

Sgt Billingham said: "We've had numerous complaints from residents about large groups of youths gathering in the area and the ensuing disorder, particularly the noise levels, underage drinking and litter.

He added: "This behaviour has made people feel intimidated and fearful.

"Having this order in place means we can protect them by moving on any groups of young people acting in an anti-social manner.

"The order also protects the young people themselves who are at risk by being out on the streets late at night.

"We hope the use of this legislation will improve life for residents living near this part of Costers Lane, reducing the fear of crime and the number of instances of anti-social behaviour."

A Section 30 Order was also introduced in Poplar Road, Batchley, on Monday.
