AN incorrigible rogue - Thomas Shakles, of Redditch - was brought up in custody before Mr J Gross - at the police court, on Monday morning, charged with wandering about and sleeping in an out-house in the parish of Redditch, without having any visible means of subsistence, on September 12.

Prisoner, who pleaded guilty, was found by Pc Green asleep in a shed near the Old Vicarage.

Mr Gross commented on the number of times Shakles had been to court for this other offences.

Did he not mean to even try a decent life? Prisoner: "Yes sir."

Superintendent Hayes said Shakles had been before the Bench 40 times for drunkenness and vagrancy.

He did not know whether prisoner was aware of the fact but he reminded him that he could, on being found guilty, be committed for trial and whipped.

He did not ask that prisoner be committed for trial on this occasion but if he came before the magistrates again he should certainly make the application, as prisoner was a nuisance to the neighbourhood.

Prisoner was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment with hard labour.
