EVESHAM councillors have given their backing to a proposal that a resident groundsman should live in a caravan at the town's Sports Club in a bid to combat vandalism.

The Evesham sports club has applied to Wychavon District Council for planning permission to site a caravan on the sports ground.

The club wants to appoint a caretaker or groundsman who will be a sports coach too on the basis he or she lives on the ground in a 20-22ft touring caravan close to the pavilion, clubhouse and the groundsman's shed.

Members would like a permanent resident on the grounds, as they feel a groundsman is needed to carry out horticultural work.

The groundsman is also needed for security reasons as although a burglar alarm is fitted if a break in occurs it takes time for the security firm or the police to arrive during which time much damage could be done.

The club feels as a qualified sports coach, the caretaker and groundsman will be on hand whenever required to coach youngsters and encourage participation in sports.

Evesham councillors were pleased with the prospect of a permanent resident on the grounds, which would mean a reduction in the reduction of crime and drug abuse.

"I know what problems there have been down at the ground.

"I myself have moved many youngsters from this area and anyone that can make the area safer can only be a good thing," said Evesham town councillor Roma Kirke.

Councillor Anthony Lyon expressed views of the caravan being an eyesore on the sports ground.

"Although a caravan is needed it should be no bigger than the school buildings sited near the grounds," said Cllr Lyon.

The council supported the application subject to the two mature trees located there would receive no damage when placing a caravan on the grounds.
