FOR the first time in the club's 25- year history, heavy rain caused the postponement of the Mathon, Cradley & Storridge tennis finals to the following day.

After defeating the reigning men's singles champion in the semi-finals, Chris Brandon-White went through to contest all three finals.

In the men's singles final, Chris recovered well from a slow start at 0-6 and 2-4 down to take the second set 7-5 from Steve Meredith, before eventually going down 4-6 in a see-saw third set.

Paired with regular partner and men's captain, Duncan Hannaford, Chris got away to a flyer 6-1 in the first set of the men's doubles against Steve Meredith and Peter Flagg. The tables were turned in the second set with Steve and Peter going into a 4-1 lead and, despite being pegged back to 4-4, levelling the match at 6-4. In the third all held serve before Chris and Duncan pulled away to take the deciding set 6-2.

In the meantime, the ladies' doubles had seen Carol Dandy and Pat Pugh take on Frances Davies and Sally Helder.

In a close first set with several breaks of serve, Carol and Pat eventually held on to a break to go up 7-5. Despite a number of deuce games, all of which Carol and Pat were able to win, Frances and Sally went down 6-2.

Anita Waite then joined Chris in the mixed doubles final against Frances Davies and Peter Flagg.

After a long initial game with several deuces, Frances and Peter took the first set 6-2 and pulled away to 4-0 in the second before closing out the match at 6-2.

The presentation of the trophies will take place at the annual social evening on Friday, November 25.

The next club event is an American Tournament on Sunday, October 2, 10am to 1.30pm.

Winter membership is open to new members. Anyone interested, contact Pat Pugh on 01531 640682.
