CELEBRATIONS were in full swing for Redditch Muslims who gathered on Sunday to mark the start of construction work on a £1.5 million mosque.

More than 400 people turned out to see building work finally start on the Jinnah Road project, two months after the proposed start date.

Central Mosque Committee vice-chairman Fakral Hussain said it was a "proud day" for the Muslim community, who had worked hard to put the plans into action.

He added: "Consultations have been going on for a long time. We have tried to take into account everyone's suggestions so the finished product reflects our community."

The completed mosque will measure more than 1,000 sq m and will boast better prayer facilities for men and women, disabled facilities and accommodate functions such as funerals.

Mr Hussain said plans for a larger mosque were made in answer to swelling numbers of worshippers at the Smallwood Street centre.

He said people of all denominations would be welcome to attend services from a purpose-built viewing gallery.

Work is expected to be completed within two years.
