SIR - Does D M Grainger seriously expect us to believe that the Tories and Liberals are always struggling for more money, having to rely on donations from grassroots members? This may be partly true in the case of the Liberals, who, until recently, had not attracted big sponsors, but it could never be said of the Tories.

All D M Grainger's comments regarding money-raising by Labour through hand-outs of privileges and titles can be applied equally to previous Tory administrations. They taught the Labour party how to do it!

What about the titles given to the likes of Michael Ashcroft or Stanley Kalms? Were they not rewards for huge donations to the Tories from their corporate interests? At the last election, the local Tories managed to deluge us with twice as much propaganda as all the other parties, thanks to the central 'war chest' raised by cronies in big business, not from the income from coffee mornings. What a waste of paper that was!

The sad fact is that bankrolling both major parties in Britain are a few people who seek to influence policy by means of large monetary donations. No wonder we poorer mortals are so disillusioned with the whole political process.
