THE Redditch Trade Justice Network (RTJN) has set itself the ambitious target of July 2 next year to convert Redditch into a "Fair Trade Town".

The organisation has the backing of Redditch Council, which passed a resolution earlier this year in support of the "Make Redditch a Fair Trade Town" campaign.

The prestigious title, held by just a few towns in the UK, is given to places that have made a proven commitment to supporting the Fair Trade movement. This means goods bearing the Fair Trade logo have to be sold in at least 16 outlets which can be cafes, restaurants or shops and used in a number of work places, for example at tea breaks or in staff canteens.

RTJN spokesman Noel Sharp said: "A number of shops already sell Fair Trade goods but we are hoping to up the trend significantly and make Redditch a town that fully supports Fair Trade.

"July 2 is a significant date because it will be the anniversary of the Make Poverty History campaign in Edinburgh."

Fair Trade goods such as tea and coffee ensure producers in developing countries get a fair deal for their produce, which is often not the case with popular brands.

Mr Sharp added: "In a very small way we in Redditch can help to address the issue of inequality which exists in the world and keeps the poorest poor."
