SEVERN Valley Railway provides a host of special events to cater for the whole family throughout the year.

These are aimed at a wide range of visitors who are not necessarily steam buffs.

Thomas the Tank Engine weekends are a smash hit with youngsters and in 2006 will be held on Saturdays and Sundays, May 6/7, May 13/14 and September 2/3 and 9/10.

The 1940s Weekend during the summer proved so popular that two years ago it was extended to two weekends to cater for a total of 12,000 passengers.

Many visitors get into the mood by dressing up in 1940s costume - although this is not compusory! - and the whole 16-mile line steps back more than 60 years for days of pure wartime nostalgia.

Other events throughout the year include a Classic Car and Bike Day, a Branch Line Gala, aimed at the pure enthusiast and which will have a GWR theme in 2006, and an Autumn Steam Gala which is one of the UK's foremost events of its kind, offering continuous train operation from the Friday morning through to the Sunday night.
