WEST Malvern entertained Burlish Olympic in the second round of the Worcestershire Minor Cup on Saturday.

WEST MALVERN 1, BURLISH OLYMPIC 5

West Malvern knew it was not going to be their day when they were forced to make a late change when centre-half Jason Griffiths cried off due to injury, which puts him out for the rest of the season.

Although West Malvern opened brightly, Burlish took command and raced into a three-goal lead inside 25 minutes. Although James Baylis in goal was having a hectic time he produced two great saves.

Matt Jacklin up front created problems for Burlish but the West could not take advantage of the few chances created. Dave Kemp was unlucky when from a poor goal kick from Burlish he drove the ball back from 40 yards with the keeper stranded, only to see the ball bounce wide of the post. Derek Brown had a 30-yard effort comeback off the bar and the Burlish keeper won praise when he made a brilliant stop to deny Matt Jacklin.

At half-time the West made one change bringing on Ed Gallagher to play in midfield. They started to create chances and in the 65th minute reduced the arrears when Matt Jacklin scored.

But, in the 70th minute, they went 4-1 down when an poor back pass from Gareth Newton completely split the West defence to set up the Burlish centre-forward.

Although the West pushed forward in an attempt to reduce the arrears they suffered when Burlish scored a fifth.

Overall, West Malvern performed well, but on the day, the undefeated so far this season Burlish were the better side.

Tomorrow (Saturday), West Malvern, sponsored by the Cross Keys and Amey, return to league duty at home to Plumbers Sports, players report to dressing room 1.15pm for 2.15pm kick-off.
