HARRIERS players have spoken of the high regard for the departing manager in the Aggborough dressing room and suggested even Jose Mourinho would have struggled to do the job.

Wayne Hatswell admitted the squad were "stunned" to learn of Watkiss's sacking after being called to a summit with the chairman yesterday morning.

The players were given the rest of the day off to come to terms with the departure of a boss who signed all but a handful of them.

"It's not nice when anybody in any walk of life loses his job and even though it's a bit different in football, we're sorry to see the gaffer go," said Hatswell.

"But life goes on and we've got to try and get the club moving in the right direction by winning football matches.

"Hopefully if we can get results, it will have a positive effect behind the scenes."

Hatswell believes the summer takeover saga and budget restrictions meant Watkiss was forced to manage Harriers with his hands tied behind his back.

"You've got to feel sorry for him with what's gone on. It would be difficult for Jose Mourinho, let alone Stuart Watkiss, when you're having to cope under those circumstances."

Hatswell said the players were 100 per cent behind caretaker boss Martin O'Connor for Saturday's trip to Conference leaders Accrington Stannley.

"Martin is a big voice in the dressing room and the lads will fully support him.

"We completely respect him, like we did with Stuart."
