A FINANCIAL helping hand is on offer to the sporting stars of tomorrow in Wyre Forest.

The Ray Mercer Sporting Foundation is making its annual appeal to youngsters who are aiming for the top of the sporting ladder to apply for its latest round of grants.

Shuttle/Times and News editor, Clive Joyce, who is a trustee of the fund, said: "We have a marvellous wealth of young talent in Wyre Forest and it is vital that this is nurtured.

"We know that financial support is important in sport and we aim to use our funds at grass roots level to encourage young people to develop to their full potential."

He added: "Many have used their grants to buy equipment or to pay for specialist coaching but we see the foundation's backing also giving them a confidence boost because it recognises chievements and dedication."

The fund, set up by the Shuttle/Times and News in memory of the late Kidderminster Harriers secretary and district councillor, Ray Mercer, has helped nearly 80 young people from more than 20 sports since it was created 10 years ago.

The foundation's trustees will be meeting at the end of this month to decide who receives a share of up to £2,000 - and applications must to be submitted by Friday, December 30.

Applicants must be under 21, excel in their chosen sport and live within the Shuttle/Times and News readership area. Grants can be awarded for specialised coaching, equipment, travelling to major events or fees for national or international competitions.

Applications should be sent to Clive Joyce, Editor, Shuttle/Times and News, Blackwell Street, Kidderminster DY10 2DY.

A summary of achievements, costs and ambitions and a supporting letter from a coach or club official must accompany all applications. A daytime telephone number should also be included.
