JOE Rowe was denied a medal at the National Cyclo-Cross Championships at Sutton Park when he was caught up in a crash on the final lap.

Bromsgrove rider Rowe suffered disappointment after he had been contending strongly for second place in the 50-years and over race.

Rowe was caught up in a crash on the last lap and had to settle for sixth place.

Rowe, a member of Wyre Forest CC, had to battle rain and snow in bitterly cold conditions.

Despite the weather he started strongly and broke away in a leading group of four riders.

While pre-race favourite and eventual winner Roy Hunt brokeaway for a clear lead, Rowe made his move on the second lap, with a turn of pace leaving the pack behind as he went second.

By the sixth lap Rowe had a healthy lead in second place, but it did not last long as he was caught up by a powerful chasing pack half way through the race.

With the finishing line in sight the Bromsgrove rider was still in contention for a top three place.

However, he was denied a medal when after he crashed during a last gasp chase, which was started by John Galway.

Rowe's clubmate Phil Blacker finished the seniors in 39th place in Sutton on Sunday.

Before the championship Rowe had been named League of Veteran Racing Cyclists cyclo-cross champion last weekend in the 50 to 55-year-old age group at Darley Moor, after winning the race.

He has enjoyed a successful season so far, winning the West Midlands Cyclo-Cross Championship in December.

He also came third in the National Trophy Series.
