BROMSGROVE Indoor Bowls Club reached the final eight of the Denny Plate for the first time in its history on Saturday by beating Bridgewater 81-80.

Victory means that the club will take on Norfolk side Gallow in the quarterfinals in the equivalent of football's FA Cup on Saturday, January 28.

To reach the final stages of the cup Bromsgrove had to hold their nerve to defeat Bridgewater.

The quartet of Martin and Richie Hall and Gareth and Adie Burbidge met their match against Bridgewater's strong team when they lost 23-11.

The foursome of Paul Kitchen, Ian Crowe, John Cracknell and Neil Brereton came from 21-16 down with a spirited fightback to win 23-22 and make sure Bromsgrove narrowed the gap.

Bromsgrove then found a higher gear, with the team of Mal Baker, Peter Davis, Andy Walters and Rob McCaughtrie getting the better of Bridgewater 27-14.

With the sides separated by just two points it was vital that Bromsgrove hold their nerve and the quartet of Brian Harper, Keith Weaver, Mark Sandoz and Marc Stones saw them win overall by one point.

Bromsgrove play Solihull in the National Top Ten on Sunday.
