A TOWN centre fish and chip shop has netted an extended licence despite concerns from police that it could encourage antisocial behaviour.

The Britannia Fish Bar on Unicorn Hill is only the second town chippy to be permitted to trade until 3am from Thursday to Saturday, and until 2am on Sunday.

Redditch Council's licensing committee approved the application last Tuesday. The committee granted the nearby Fisherman's Catch chip shop a similar licence at the end of last year.

Both applications received a hefty portfolio of objections from the police who raised concerns that the late licences would increase the likelihood of alcohol-related crime.

However, committee member Councillor Michael Braley denied that granting the Fisherman's Catch a late licence had set the precedent for other outlets.

"We decide every case on it's own merit. On Tuesday, we listened to all sides of the argument and made a decision based on our findings," he said.

Mr Braley said they had granted the licence on the conditions that chip shop workers clears up the rubbish outside the premises every night.

When the application was submitted, the owner recommended that if the licence was granted his partner would undergo training to ensure they were able run the business in their absence.

"We agreed to this condition but stipulated that the training must be carried out within a month," added Mr Braley.

Owner Mohammed Rafiq said he was delighted with the outcome of the hearing.

But police licensing officer Pc Simon Worley said: "It's a pity the police was the only organisation to object to this extended licence and we're disappointed that it has been granted, especially as we noticed a significant reduction in disorder in the area while the premises were closed for a short period last year."

He said that now the licence had been granted the police will continue their work in the area to ensure revellers can enjoy themselves safely.

"We also want to take this opportunity to remind all those with premises supplying hot food or drink after 11pm that they do require a licence."
