FORGE Mill Needle Museum is being earmarked for closure in a desperate bid to save money.

The Advertiser has learned Redditch Council is considering a number of cost-cutting options, including the closure of the Bordesley-based centre.

The museum, dedicated to the town's rich industrial heritage, was described as "the jewel in Redditch's crown" by late mayor Ken Redfern.

Wolverhampton man Mark Cooper, a regular volunteer at the museum, said staff feared for their jobs.

He said: "They are understandably very worried. I can't understand why the council would even consider shutting such a wonderful centre."

Mr Cooper, whose club, The Bowmen of England Archers, is also a regular supporter of the museum, has written to Council Leader Phil Mould: "Our organisation was astonished to hear of the museum's possible closure.

''The centre provides educational facilities at all levels, from the encouragement of children and youth groups in the arts and science of history, archaeology and local studies. It has the unique benefit of being a lovely attraction to the population not only in Redditch but from as far afield as Birmingham and the Black Country.''

But Borough Director Chris Smith would not specify any of the cost-cutting options being considered.

He said: "As part of the 2006-7 budget strategy, we have to identify areas where savings can be made. All options are subject to consultation.

"The initial consultation period will end on January 26 and options will be discussed at the council meeting on January 30.''
