SIR - Make Poverty History is a slogan which one is beginning to see in many different forums. The truth behind the absolute necessity to eradicate poverty in all its forms is essential for us all.

Poverty nationally and internationally provides a ripe area for the development of subversive and disruptive elements. These may manifest themselves locally in anti- social behaviour or internationally in acts of extreme terrorism. People live in poverty because of a variety of reasons but there is no necessity.

The human race is wealthy in many ways, both materially and spiritually. They do not always go together. We need to share more and this can be done by reducing our excessive consumption and waste.

We all have an obligation to make 2006 the year in which poverty was made history and equality was established as our norm.
