A RUNDOWN Kidderminster shopping centre could undergo a multi-million pound facelift.

Consultations are due to be carried out with shopkeepers and local residents to find out what they would like to see at the Offmore shopping precinct as part of the rejuvenation project.

Plans could include better shopping facilities, improved car parking and enhanced security. There could also be additional homes built, particularly for families in the area.

Originally, the 1970s shopping area was supposed to have two rows of shops but due to a downturn in demand at that time, only one row was ever built. That left the development permanently unfinished, with large empty spaces.

Managing director of Wyre Forest Community Housing, Yvonne Leishman, said: "We are currently looking at a feasibility study to regenerate the shops, parking and security in the surrounding area.

"However this is at a very early stage, it has no formal approvals, and whether it goes ahead will depend on the outcomes of our feasibility work, particularly on funding.

"It offers an exciting opportunity to regenerate the area, provide a new shopping area, car parking, and some new homes."

The proposals have been welcomed by Wyre Forest district councillors, Mike and Fran Oborski, who represent the Offmore and Comberton area.

Mr Oborski said: "This is a huge step and is going to involve considerable planning and effort to get it right for everyone. If it comes off, this could be the biggest improvement to the area since the Offmore Estate was first developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s."

The consultation process is expected to start within the next few weeks.
