WORK has started on a £900,000 scheme to build one of the two counties' largest tennis centres, in Pershore.

Pershore Tennis Centre and Pershore Group of Colleges are building three indoor courts and adding an outdoor court as well as extensive facilities behind Pershore College.

Malvern Tennis Club currently houses the only two indoor courts open to non-members in Worcest-ershire and Herefordshire and the only other indoor facilities are three courts at the members-only David Lloyd Centre in Bromsgrove.

The lions' share of the £905,000 cost is being borne by the Lawn Tennis Association and Lottery body Sport England but there are also contributions from Pershore College, the tennis club and Wychavon District Council.

The first sod was cut yesterday on a project which will also provide a new clubhouse, changing rooms, pro-shop and bar.

Work is expected to be finished by July.
