FARMS across Worcestershire have become more wildlife friendly with 16,076 hectatres covered by the 182 Environmental Stewardship agreements finalised so far.

Geoff Sansome, regional manager for the West Midlands Rural Development Service, said: "In Worcestershire and across the West Midlands region as a whole, the take up of the ES has been very encouraging. Farmers have shown that it's quite possible and desirable to implement environmental schemes such as this and be rewarded for their efforts.

The scheme enables farmers to earn up to £30 a hectare for delivering work such as maintaining hedgerows, leaving conservation strips around fields and creating beetle banks.
