Dr Stanley Haynes, of Malvern, writes to the Daily Graphic protesting against that paper's description of the proposal to effect a complete change in the British naval seaman's uniform as a "hideous plot", and suggests that its admiration of the "picturesqueness" of a uniform that he regards as merely untidy has warped its judgement. Dr Haynes says the present uniform affords insufficient to their chests, and that they consequently are unnecessarily prone to consumption, pneumonia and other preventable diseases. In connection with the fire at the White House, Eastnor, on Sunday evening, a youth, aged 15 and employed there, has made the statement that he was scaring crows in a field adjoining the barn, and when the evening rain came, he sought shelter in the barn, where the fire broke out. He further states that he was smoking cigarettes. The insurance company is satisfied that the cause of the fire was accidental. Ledbury Free Press, January 16, 1906.

The Rev J D Pearce Higgins, former vicar of Hanley Castle and Hanley Swan, and now vicar of Putney, paid a return visit to Hanley Swan on Saturday for the purpose of opening the village's new War Memorial Hall. The hall, the outcome of ten years of hard effort by the villagers, cost approximately £3,100. It is constructed of brick with a cedar shingle roof and a South African hardwood floor. Ledbury Town Football Club hold their annual beauty queen dance at the Royal Oak Hotel, Ledbury, next Friday. There are several attractive prizes, as usual. Ledbury Town's representative was second, last year, and there are high hopes for this year's competition. Ledbury Reporter, January 20, 1956.

Malvern will become a "phantom town" if car parking in the centre is not improved, a Hills District councillor said on Tuesday. Councillor Ros Underwood told the public health committee that unless more parking spaces were provided, they could not expect traders to pay the high rates charged. The committee voted against taking any action, in spite of several letters complaining of the lack of parking facilities and a petition signed by 70 of the town's shopkeepers. Half the workforce of a Ledbury engineering company was made redundant last week, in what was described by management as a change of policy by the firm. Six shop floor workers at Ledbury Steels Ltd lost their jobs last Wednesday, as the company diversified its activities away from Ledbury. Ledbury Reporter, January 15, 1981.
