A PROPOSAL to turn a former Kidderminster nightclub into an affordable housing complex has got the green light.

Wyre Forest District Council's planning committee met on Tuesday night to discuss the application from South Court Housing Trust to turn the Zanzibar premises in Castle Road into 38 apartments.

The site would include tiered canalside apartments and the art deco entrance would also be incorporated.

Planning officer, Paul Round, said that the design would provide a vibrant frontage to the canalside and to Castle Road. He added the applicant was also prepared to contribute money to an urban park area in Park Lane.

Concerns were raised among councillors, however, that there would be 38 apartments with just 35 parking spaces.

Councillor Fran Oborski also had concerns about access to Age Concern's Tulip Tree Centre. She believed the new development could create traffic hazards for pedestrians.

Councillor Marcus Hart said: "I do support this development but I know of residents who have concerns over parking.

" However, we have to balance that up against the apartments as a whole and it is a town centre site so, hopefully, people will be able to walk to work or use public transport links."

The building dates back to 1929 and was originally the town's swimming baths before Wyre Forest Glades opened in 1986.

It was then turned into a nightclub - first as Knights and then Zanzibar - but closed two years ago.
