A BEWDLEY town councillor wants the council to transfer two parking spaces used by members to disabled visitors.

The spaces are in Load Street car park and available for town councillors to use while on council business, as well as the town clerk and his secretary.

Gordon Yarranton asked the council at a meeting on Monday last week to consider moving the spaces to either of the car parks in Dog Lane and Gardeners Meadow.

He said he felt spaces, which were close to the shops, could be better used by disabled people who would find it easier to get to Load Street.

Speaking later, he said: "Parking has been a problem in Bewdley for many years.

"I have spoken to many residents who would find it easier to come into town if these spaces were available."

Paul Gittins said: "I do support Councillor Yarranton. Parking is at a premium.

"We have reserved parking for members of the council.

"I know a lot of the time they are used by members of the public but a lot of the time the public are being fair and not using them."

He added that if the mayor, town clerk and his secretary were given a pass so they could park somewhere else, they should be given up.

Councillor Louise Edginton said she did not believe the council should give the spaces up as the councillors did a lot for the community, adding: "It is important to remember that councillors do not get paid and I do not want to see that change."

Councillor Anne Mace said she believed that when councillors were in the town on council business, such as attending meetings, they should be able to park for free, adding: "I do not expect to be out of pocket for giving my time."

Members agreed to look at the possibility of making the spaces suitable for disabled users and would make a decision at the next council meeting, on Monday, February 27.
