MALVERN Town lost to fellow Midland Alliance championship contenders Stourbridge after a hard-fought game in which they deserved a share of the points.

STOURBRIDGE 2, MALVERN TOWN 1

After taking the lead, they lost to two quality goals. Malvern had the better of the first-half with Bullock and Shepherd going close before on 20 minutes, Preedy's cross was flicked on by Shepherd to Rik Halion, who coolly curled the ball past goalkeeper Solly.

Bullingham replied for the hosts but his shot drifted wide. When the ball was played to feet, Preedy and Willetts were getting in some good crosses but on too many occasions the ball was pumped in the air, which was comfortable for the tall Stourbridge back four.

Malvern had another chance to increase their lead when Owen blasted wide, then a jinking run by Willetts saw the striker's shot agonisingly just miss the target.

Stourbridge's first shot on goal, just before the interval, saw Bullingham some 40 yards out flick the ball up and volley home a spectacular equaliser.

The second-half started off scrappily before Taylor controlled the ball, turned Burrows and fired past Humphries all in one movement.

Malvern pressed for the equaliser with Jukes going close on two occasions. Stourbridge threatened on the break as Malvern pushed forward. Shepherd fired one wide and then over before Owen headed tamely at Solly.

With five minutes remaining, Halion sent Owen clear but the striker shot wide with only the keeper to beat.

Tomorrow (Saturday), leaders Malvern Town will hope to get their season back on track when they entertain lowly Causeway United at Langland Stadium (3pm).
