DROITWICH Spa got a little greener last Saturday as part of plans to plant 200 trees across the area.
Wychavon District Council stumped up the cash to buy the oak trees to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar. It is now planned to spread the trees across the district with suitable areas still being earmarked.
Droitwich Spa was one of the first places to benefit from the scheme when Wychavon District Council Chairman Pam Davey joined Worcester Sea Cadets to plant some of the trees at Droitwich Woods.
That event followed the planting of an oak in St Peter's Field to mark the Queen's 80th birthday later this year.
At that event, on Tuesday, March 7, Councillor Davey was joined by Dr Gerald Jones, chairman of St Peter's Field Trust, whose grandmother, when she was mayor of Droitwich Spa, planted a tree in Lido Park to commemorate the Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897. His father, Eric Shirley Jones, also planted an avenue of oaks before gifting the site to the town.
Cllr Davey said: "The oaks will be a constant reminder of those important moments in history and will continue to grow and flourish in Droitwich Spa, and indeed the rest of the district, in years to come."
