A BROADWAY county councillor has called for support from residents as she aims to build a new multi-purpose facility for youngsters in the village.

County councillor Liz Eyre is hoping to kick start a new project for youngsters because the existing youth centre in Leamington Road, Broadway, will no longer be fit for use by 2007 after serving youngsters for 35 years.

Cllr Eyre said: "I am trying to create a preventative measure supporting children and teenagers and their families and engaging them by assuring them they have somewhere to go to when the current youth club comes to an end.

"A new multi-purpose facility for youngsters up to the age of 13 will pay dividends. Funding for this project may need to be sought over the next three years."

Cllr Eyre who attended a meeting in January in connection with planning for Worcestershire children and young people, involving 16 community leaders, identified three things that would make a significant change to children and young people's lives in Broadway.

One of the three things identified highlighted the need for facilities to support children and young people when they are at school.

Head at St Mary's RC primary school Jacqui LeMaitre supports the idea and said: "The proposed youth club would be a wonderful facility for our village and the surrounding areas.

"The children of this village have needed a facility such as this for such a long time and we look forward to working with Broadway First School on this project."

Head at Broadway first school Michael Appleby was not available for a comment as the Journal went to press.

Broadway parish clerk Eddie Vickers said: "Parish councillors do support the youth club project in principle but no final decisions have yet been taken. We have merely given permission for our county councillor Liz Eyre to fact find and produce a document."

Worcestershire County Council has also said he is happy to identify an area of consideration for the new centre.
