TOWN centre shoppers can now bin their waste in a new recycling unit.

An on-street recycling unit has been installed opposite the Three Cooks bakery near St Stephen's Church on Church Green where residents can dispose of newspapers, glass bottles or metal cans.

Redditch Council waste management officer Ceridwen John said: "We're very keen to try different ways of encouraging people to recycle more of their waste and we really hope this scheme works.

"At the moment, this is a trial but if it works well, then we can look at possibly including plastic bottles in the future."

But she said it was important not to put normal waste in these bins.

"If it's contaminated, then we won't be able to recycle the contents."

Meanwhile, residents across Worcestershire have responded well to a county council recycling competition.

The spot-the-difference competition printed in the Target 75 newsletter received more than 4,000 responses.

The magazine was sent to households throughout the county in February to raise awareness of recycling and the Target 75 campaign.
