THE levels of clinical care, patient safety and staff training at Worcestershire's hospitals - including the Alex in Redditch - have been given the thumbs up.

For the first time, Worcest-ershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust achieved Level Two accreditation for both general clinical services and maternity services in the national Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts (CNST).

The three sites - the Alex, Kidderminster and Worcester Royal hospitals were rigorously inspected over four days.

According to the trust's chief executive John Rostill the awards would equal a saving of £800,000 on annual premiums.

He said: "We are not complacent though and we will continue to look for ways to improve on our performance and move towards Level Three accreditation."

The trust's director of nursing, Rachel Overfield, added:

"We are delighted with our success in this very thorough and demanding inspection process.

"It is a reward for a great deal of hard work which has been done and sends out a clear message that this is a trust which takes patient safety very seriously indeed."
