A TOWN councillor is swapping politics for plimsolls to take part in the third Redditch Fun Run.

Gavin Smithers, a Conservative councillor for Webheath, has signed up to run the 10km race, which is taking place at Arrow Valley Countryside Centre on Saturday, May 20.

The 46-year-old has chosen to run in aid of the Primrose Hospice, which offers care and support to cancer sufferers in Redditch and Bromsgrove.

And Mr Smithers, who has never run a 10k race before, is also hoping to achieve a personal goal of completing the route in about 50 minutes.

He said: "The important thing is to raise lots of money for the hospice and we'll celebrate by having a fun evening after the race at Coconut Island. Everyone who sponsors me will be welcome there."

Other energetic residents are still being sought to take part in the charity run.

And while all participants can raise money for their own worthwhile cause, further town charities will benefit from the obligatory entry fee.

This year's chosen charities include Carers Careline, What's Your Point and the Primrose Hospice.

As well as the 10k race there is a 6km fun run/walk, a toddle waddle and a wheelchair route.

Entry forms are available from www.arrow-community-events.org.uk, One Stop Shops, the Abbey Stadium, the town hall, McDonalds and YMCA Church Hill.
