AN investigation is due to be opened into the death of an inmate found hanging in his cell in a Tardebigge prison.

Robert Novitt, from Derbyshire, was found hanging in his double cell at HMP Blaken-hurst at 2.45pm on Friday.

A Home Office spokesman said Mr Novitt, who would have been 59 yesterday, was on remand awaiting trial for possession of indecent photographs of children.

"Staff attempted to resuscitate him and paramedics were called but he was pronounced dead at 4.40pm," the spokesman said.

"As in all deaths in custody, the police, coroner and next of kin have been informed and there will be an investigation by the prisons and probation ombudsman."
