HIGH-tech measures are being investigated to help solve traffic problems on a town centre road.

An infra-red bar beam could be put in place to stop the regular problem of vans and trucks getting stuck under the ring road bridge near Grosvenor House on Prospect Hill.

Regular incidents mean the road is blocked and traffic is forced to use a different route. Last week alone two trucks became stuck under the bridge - one on Monday morning and another on Thursday.

But a Worcestershire County Council spokesman said the height limit signs were clear as the majority of motorists adhered to them and it was only a small minority that got trapped.

He said the problems did not cost the county council anything but the effect on other drivers who were not at fault had prompted its bridge engineering department to look into a solution to the problem.

"While it does not actually cost us anything, there's a knock-on effect for people who have done nothing wrong," he said.

"We are exploring the idea of a beam bar which is an infra- red beam of light which goes across the carriageway and will alert drivers that their vehicle is too high to go under the bridge."

He said they would have to look at the feasibility of using the bar beam because of operational difficulties that could arise but that it was a possibility.

"There are no issues with the signs because hundreds of people get it right every day but because of people who for whatever reason do not adhere to the signs, we are investigating it," he added.
