POPULAR Redditch entertainer John Emms took a final trip down memory lane when he visited an RAF base where he served 57 years ago - just weeks before it was closed.

Armed with many happy memories, Mr Emms was one of only six former servicemen and civilians chosen to visit RAF Stafford before it shut last week.

The 74-year-old Astwood Bank man was selected from a large number of applicants who contacted a Staffordshire newspaper with their memories of the base.

Mr Emms spent his two years of National Service at the base between 1949-51, after which he returned to Redditch and ran a successful greengrocer.

The Church Road resident cut short his holiday to attend the event but said: "I wouldn't have missed it for anything."

He shared his fond memories of his time with the other visitors over tea and biscuits in the officers' mess.

Mr Emms is now well known in Redditch for his piano playing, nostalgic sing-a-longs and regular appearances as an extra in Eastenders.
