PLANS are being drawn up to transform Droitwich Spa Cricket Club's pavilion.

Cricket could well be played in style and comfort this summer if townsfolk rally round to help at the popular club venue.

A national initiative aims to enhance the St Peter's Fields clubhouse with work being planned for this weekend.

The project is part of Cricketforce, a scheme involving more than 1,000 clubs in England and Wales which seeks support from players and the public.

Among the projects outlined for the Spa-based side are plans to update the shower facilities, tiling the kitchen area and installing new curtains and benches for the bar area. The changing rooms are set for a repaint with new seating throughout.

Club chairman Simon Holliday said: "It's a great opportunity to get as many people involved whether they are a member of the club or not.

"We have also managed to get some local businesses to help out with re-paving the entrance to the pavilion and replacing the guttering and fencing, which has been ripped out by vandals who have been rampant here in recent years."

The work is due to take place between 9am and 1pm and again from 1-5pm this Saturday and Sunday. Anyone interesting in helping out should call Simon on 07971992136. The club is especially keen to hear from local businesses which think they may be able to offer some skills or equipment.

During the Saturday afternoon session helpers will also be joined by a member of Worcestershire County Cricket Club.
