A DISABLED horse rider, who scooped a top award only a few weeks ago, is now hoping to continue her success with the help of Spa folk.

Determined Philippa Bishop won the Paralympic Winter Championship in Leicester on her dressage horse.

The 25-year-old Droitwich rider was born with her right arm missing just below the elbow, but still wanted to do everything her older brother Oliver did and has not let the disability hold her back.

Philippa began riding at the age of eight and although Oliver gave up after a couple of years, she persevered and since buying her horse Alfie, just over a year ago, has gone from strength to strength.

Philippa, who is a legal secretary for MFG Solicitors in Droitwich, said: "I bought him from an able-bodied rider so he has had to adapt, but I think we have the measure of each other now."

In February Philippa, who receives her dressage training from Julie Thomas in Broughton Green, near Hanbury, went to a Paralympic talent spotting day in Leicester, where she won her class and was given a place on a viewing day in October at Stow-on-the-Wold. From there a world class potential squad will be chosen.

In November there will also be a selection day to choose the British squad which will receive lottery funding and training to compete in national and international competitions.

If Philippa's form and success continues she stands a great chance of being invited to move up to the world class performance squad which competes at the Paralympics.

The Spa rider has already been asked to compete in Portugal in June, but needs to raise £1,000 to get her horse to the event.

"It would be fantastic if someone could help me raise the funds to go on the trip. My horse needs to go to Paris, Santander and then across to Portugal," she said.
