DROITWICH Spa's mayor is hoping businesses and organisations in the town can stump up support for a six-a-side charity cricket tournament.

Councillor Richard Morris is planning a cricket competition for Spa people who fancy trying their skills. He came up with the idea while watching town resident Ashley Giles put Australia in a spin during last year's Ashes victory.

Combining forces with Droitwich Spa Cricket Club, he hopes to get interest from eight teams for the day-long tournament, which will be held on May 1 at St Peter's Fields. All proceeds raised will be spilt between the club and the mayor's charities.

"We have a great cricket club in the town with more than 100 members who have been very successful at all ages in the last couple of years," said the mayor.

"I hope that if businesses, organisations or even families can get a side together, we can raise some money for my four chosen charities, as well as the cricket club."

Club secretary Adrian Field added: "The day starts at 12noon and involves two groups of four teams on the club's two pitches. Each team is guaranteed at least three games with a semi-final and final for those who progress.

"We can provide playing equipment along with the bar being open all day and a barbecue in the evening - it should be a lot of fun."

Those interested in entering, which costs £30 per team, can contact Adrian Field for further information by calling 07919163501 or email Adrian.field@tiscali.co.uk before April 13.
