THE saddest and most significant result of the variable weather experienced last month - when east winds prevailed most of the time, varying while in the degree of their biting coldness - is seen in the reports of the various medical officers' health.
At Tuesday's meeting with the Redditch Urban Council the medical officer reported 31 deaths in March.
This establishes a bad record for Redditch regarding the actual number of deaths and the rate for any one month.
The high mortality rate was not due to any extent to infectious diseases but to bronchitis and other diseases with the respiratory organs - the deaths for these causes being about three times the average monthly rate.
In the quarter ending March 31 the birth rate was 29.7 and the death rate 19.7 per 1,000 of the population, both the rates being above average for the district.
