Tenbury 15pts Old Griffinians 19

A STRONG wind played a dominant part in Tenbury's hard-fought North-Mids Shield game with Old Griffinians, who are a well-drilled Birmingham side heading their division in the Midlands West League.

It is true to say that the wind was a big advantage for the visitors during the first half of this quarter-final encounter and then for Tenbury in the second when they scored most of their points.

Tenbury fielded a strong side, despite missing a few regulars , and were particularly prominent during the opening stages.

It was no surprise when flanker Frazer Young scored a try which Paul Higgins converted.

But the Tenbury attacking play was short-lived when the Old Griffinians started using the wind to their advantage and they forced Tenbury to defend stubbornly and make mistakes. The visitors landed four penalties and increased their tally to make it 19-7 in their favour.

Tenbury were relieved to have the wind behind them and they used the conditions to help launch some good moves.

They pinned the visitors in their own half before landing a penalty through Higgins and then an unconverted try from fly-half Darren Price.

The last twenty minutes saw Tenbury encamped in the Old Griffinians half but they were thwarted from crossing the line. Overall, it was a good display by Tenbury and they were unlucky to lose.

However, they will be hoping for a better result this weekend when they play their last league game of the season at Handsworth.
